Not the same Ricketts #27

Pat Ricketts played cornerback for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Ricketts finished his Senior year (2003) with 35 tackles, including 26 solo stops. He had a season-high five tackles that year against Texas A&M.

Sure, there are plenty of folks around these parts who consider themselves Husker fans (not EVERYBODY in Western Iowa supports the Hawkeyes or the Cyclone) but let's face it, he really have doesn't have anything to do with the TOWN of Ricketts, but MOST of the rest of this website does!

If you grew up in Ricketts, be sure to plan on coming to our annual reunion, the third Saturday in July.

If you have memories or pictures of Ricketts to share, email them to our webmaster: ted.mallory -at- gmail.com.

Wesleyan University (Connecticut) Art Professor Rowland Ricketts and his wife Chinami use natural plant dyes to create both artworks and functional textiles. They really like indigo (kind of a blue-violet color).

You're right, they look like nice enough folks, but let's face it, they don't really have anything to do with the TOWN of Ricketts, but MOST of the rest of this website does!

If you grew up in Ricketts, be sure to plan on coming to our annual reunion, the third Saturday in July.

Not the same Ricketts #24

Town Marshall William A. Ricketts, affectionately known as Big Bill, was a one-person police force from 1896 to 1903, when the population of Ames, Iowa was 2,400. Ricketts spent his time corralling brawlers, chastising bootleggers, and nabbing thieves.

While he was from Iowa, Big Bill had nothing whatsoever to do with the town of Ricketts in Western Iowa- but the rest of this blog does. Send us your pictures and memories if you're from Ricketts and be sure to come visit for the annual Ricketts Kids Reunion whether you're from here or if your last name happens to be Ricketts- we'll welcome you into the family! Just make sure you buy a t-shirt.

Not the same Ricketts #23

Dr. Matthew Oliver Ricketts was the generally acknowledged political leader of Omaha’s African Americans at the turn of the 20th century. Ricketts was born to an enslaved couple near New Castle, Kentucky in 1858. He later received a degree from Lincoln Institute at Jefferson City, Missouri, and three years later moved to Omaha. When he arrived in Omaha in 1880, despite scarce resources, he was admitted to Omaha Medical College, where he worked as a janitor to pay his tuition. Elected to the state legislature for the sessions of 1892 and 1894, he became the first Nebraskan of African descent to sit in that body.

You're right, even though Omaha is just an hour and a half away from here, Doc Ricketts has pretty much nothing whatsoever to do with the TOWN of Ricketts, but MOST of the rest of this website does!

If you grew up in Ricketts, be sure to plan on coming to our annual reunion, the third Saturday in July.

Not the same Ricketts #22

I have NO idea who these guys are. Ever hear of them? Evidently, they put out an album in 1973 in Spain that you can now buy for $18 at a record store (or antique shop) in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

I haven't heard them, so I don't know if they're any good, but it's a sure thing that they don't have much to do with Ricketts, Iowa. However, the rest of this website does. If you're from Ricketts or around it and you have memories or pictures to share, we'd sure love to hear from you. And don't forget our annual Ricketts Kid's Reunion coming up this next weekend! Hope to see you there. Why not bring our guitar and plan to jam?!!

Dear Ted,

Being a relative of Joe Ricketts (“Not the Same Ricketts, File #17”), I don’t have anything to do with Ricketts, Iowa either but feel compelled to comment on the USS Ricketts pictured on your website (“Not the Same Ricketts, File #4”).

The hull shown in the picture is that of the USS Biddle. The name is on the transom. The Biddle was renamed USS Claude V. Ricketts (DDG 5) in 1964 after WW2 hero and former Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, VADM Claude Vernon Ricketts after serving as USS Biddle (DD 955 / DDG 5) for over five years. The caption for the photo in your file actually describes the USS RICKETTS (DE 254), named for another WW2 hero LT Milton E. Ricketts. There were two “USS Ricketts” in the US Navy.

In addition to the two officers mentioned above, RADM Myron Ricketts also served with distinction in the Naval Sea Systems Command.

LCDR Steven D. Ricketts (USN, Ret)

Well whattya know?!

Thank you so much for the information Lieutenant Commander.
And thank you for your service to our country too.

Any body got a picture of the OTHER USS. Ricketts?
Or how about pictures or memories about Ricketts, Iowa? Send 'em and we'll post 'em. Meanwhile, we hope to see you at the Ricketts Kids Reunion this month. Steve, Milton, and Myron, you're all invited too- what the heck!

Not the same Ricketts #20

Entertainment is a big part of the 2nd Annual Rhea County Ag Day festivities, and 2007 was no exception. Their performers this Angela Davis, Jim Ricketts, Pickin’ and Dumplin’ and the Bush River Band. Bring a lawn chair and sit in the shade while you sip lemonade from the 4-H concession stand and enjoy southern gospel music and old-fashioned bluegrass.

Of course, that's on the fairgrounds in Evensville, Tennessee and therefore has absolutely nothing to do with Ricketts, Iowa, (we're in Crawford County, Iowa, that is). But most of this website is all about Ricketts, Iowa!

If you're from Ricketts, you're invited to their annual reunion, next year it will be on the fourth Saturday in July.

Now, if like Jim the Gospel Bluegrass singer, you're last name happens to be Ricketts, and you think it would be fun to have your family reunion in or around Ricketts, IA- more power to ya! Stop on by the Ricketts Kids' Reunion and say howdy when you're here!

As for everybody else, if you have memories or pictures of Ricketts to share, email them to our webmaster: ted.mallory@gmail.com I'll even accept funny, kitsch, or corny "Not the same Ricketts" ideas. Help put Ricketts on the map!

Not the same Ricketts #19

William Ricketts was no doubt a descendant of the above mentioned ancestors. He too was born December 6, 1804 in Maryland. He moved to Missouri where he made his living as a farmer. This William was an decendent of another William; a William Ricketts who immigrated to Maryland in 1654 where he made his living as a farmer. In 1642 Edward Ricketts arrived in the USA followed by Frances Ricketts in 1650. Both Edward & Francis are believed to have been brothers. These Ricketts all originated on the Isle of Wight off the Southern coast of Great Britain.

Of course, none of them have anything to do with the town of Ricketts Iowa, but most of the rest of this website does. As far as we know, it wasn't named after anyone named Ricketts who live around here.

Remember, if you're from Ricketts, you're invited to their annual reunion, next year it will be on the fourth Saturday in July. Now, if you're last name IS Ricketts, and you think it would be fun to have your family reunion in or around Ricketts, IA- more power to ya! Stop on by the Ricketts Kids' Reunion and say howdy when you're here!

Not the same Ricketts #18

Lieutenant Milton Ernest Ricketts, USN (1913-1942). Halftone photograph copied from Medal of Honor, The Navy. Lt. Ricketts was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism during the Battle of Coral Sea, 8 May 1942. He was in charge of a USS Yorktown (CV-5) damage control party that suffered many casualties from a bomb explosion. Despite mortal wounds, Lt. Rickets deployed a fire hose and successfully contained the resulting fire before he died.

You guessed it, Lt. Milt here doesn't really have anything to do with the city of Ricketts, a sleepy little village in Western Iowa, but most of the rest of this website does.

Don't forget, if you're from Ricketts, you're invited to their annual reunion, next year it will be on the fourth Saturday in July. If you're Joe Ricketts, maybe you'd like to come too, and bring the team, Ricketts has a ball diamond. Maybe they'd be willing to put on an exhibition. Or play the guys in the Fire Dept? Wouldn't that be great?

As for everybody else, if you have memories or pictures of Ricketts to share, email them to our webmaster: ted.mallory@gmail.com I'll even accept funny, kitsch, or corny "Not the same Ricketts" ideas. Help put Ricketts on the map!

I mean it you guys- I need your help. There are a couple of people who hate when I post these "not the same Ricketts" things on here, well, then send me something better. What's going on in Ricketts? Any announcements? Any great memories or stories or pictures? How about from Ricketts Thanksgivings from days gone by?! Help me out- please!

Not the same Ricketts #17

TD Ameritrade Holding Corp.'s founder Joe Ricketts is now part of the crowd of potential buyers for the Chicago Cubs baseball franchise, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.

The Cubs team is up for sale because its owner, the Tribune Co., is selling itself to Chicago real estate mogul Sam Zell for $8.2 billion. That deal was contingent on the media company selling its non-core assets, including one of the most fabled franchises in sports.

Astronomical prices are expected for the Cubs. Forbes estimated the value of the Cubs at $592 million in April. Only four baseball franchises had higher values in the magazine's annual list: the Yankees at $1.2 billion, the New York Mets at $736 million, the Boston Red Sox at $724 million and the Los Angeles Dodgers at $632 million.

I know that this will be hard to believe, but Joe Ricketts really has nothing to do with the city of Ricketts, a sleepy little village in Western Iowa, but most of the rest of this website does.

We hope to see you at the Ricketts' Kids Day at Ricketts City Park & Shelter House.

MSSN Ricketts shows off his galley aboard the USS Barb, a submarine stationed in Hawaii. Pictured below in port at Hong Kong.

You see, there are people named Rickett all over the world. So why aren't there any in the town of Ricketts, Iowa? You'll have to ask some of the Ricketts kids at their annual reunion next month! It's gonna be on the third Saturday in July.

Meanwhile, if you have memories or pictures of Ricketts to share, email them to our webmaster: ted.mallory -at- gmail.com

Right again, some limey named John whor races FOREIGN cars over in England really has nothing to do with the REAL Ricketts. But you gotta love how they spell "tyres."

Just a reminder, if you grew up in Ricketts IOWA, be sure to plan on coming to our annual reunion, the third Saturday in July.

If you have memories or pictures of Ricketts to share, email them to our webmaster: ted.mallory -at- gmail.com But until you do, I still have more of these funny, kitsch, or corny "Not the same Ricketts" ideas, send them too. Help put Ricketts on the map!

Thomas Ricketts was born in White Bay and was only 6 months past his 15th birthday when he enlisted in the Newfoundland Regiment in September, 1916. In October of 1918 he was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military award for bravery in the British Commonwealth. He was invested with the Victoria Cross by King George V, January 19, 1919.

Okay, okay, Newfoundland is a long way from Crawford County Iowa and a Canadian WWI hero realy doesn't have anything to do with the TOWN of Ricketts, but MOST of the rest of this website does!

Ronnie Ricketts: The Philippines most efficient line-producer. Director. Top box-office action star. Scriptwriter. Martial artist. Past president of the Philippine Film Actors Guild. Recipient of numerous critical awards.

Yeah, I don't know what a Philipino Kung Fu master has to do with Ricketts, Iowa either - but, hey! The rest of this website does!

Quattro 2003 by Julia Ricketts

Julia Ricketts body of work explores subject matter that combines elements of architecture, geography, and the emotional qualities of place. Although primarily abstract works, Ricketts uses a language of marks that evoke landscapes that seemingly reveal actual sites. Ricketts’ monochromatic palette lends itself to the shapes and lines she creates to reveal new perspectives. Ricketts states, “Within the edges of my paintings forms are realized or dissolved, tensions created, and conflicts resolved.”

Abstract Expressionist paintings don't have anything to do with Ricketts, Iowa - but the rest of this website does!

This common and popular hornpipe has been retained in the Appalachian tradition and it is not uncommon to hear it at bluegrass and old time festivals. American musicians often play hornpipes very fast. If you'd like to hear it played by some Celtic band that calls themselves "Wild Dismay," click here: http://www.blackflute.com/music/tunes/hornpipes/ricketts.html

This song really doesn't have anything to do with Ricketts, Iowa (neither does most folk music, for that matter) - but the rest of this website does!

This is a sign for the "Ricketts All Parts" Company in Des Moines.

The state's largest city, which is also our capital is at least 90 miles away, so we're pretty sure that Rickett's wasn't started, owned or run by anybody who has anything to do with our pretty little village of Ricketts, Iowa.

But this website is kind of our sign for anyone interested in the Ricketts Kids' Reunion the third weekend of each July.

If you have pictures or stories about the real town of Ricketts, or something silly for our "Not the same Ricketts" files- please email them to our webmeister; ted.mallory -at-gmail.com

Not the same Ricketts: #9

John Peter "Pete" Ricketts is the former Chief Operating Officer of Ameritrade . He was the Republican nominee for the 2006 U.S. Senate race in Nebraska which he lost to incumbent Ben Nelson. Ricketts was born in Nebraska City, Nebraska, and now lives in Omaha .

Even though Omaha is just about an hour and a half away, and the town of Ricketts is in Iowa's Fifth Congressional District, which is about as red as you get, even in a red state- this ultra right-wing wing-nut has nothing to do with Ricketts, Iowa.

But you'll have plenty to do if you come to the annual reunion of adults who were kids in Ricketts, the third weekend in July. If you're from Ricketts, or have family who is and you have pictures or stories to tell- please send it to our webmeister; ted.mallory-at-gmail.com

Hey, if you have more ideas for our "Not the same Ricketts" files, especially if they're campy, kitch or corny- send them too!

Not the same Ricketts; File #8

Ricketts House (or Ricketts Hovse) is one of the four original fraternity houses at Caltech. Its construction was funded by Louis Davidson Ricketts. Members of Ricketts House are called Skurves (or Scurves) due to a play on the similarity of the name Ricketts to the disease rickets and the fact that scurvy is another vitamin deficiency disease.[1]

Ricketts traditions include fire related activities and the brakedrum. Prior to 2003, the Ricketts courtyard housed a large concrete firepot, in which massive fires were often enjoyed during cool Pasadena evenings. However, due to tightening of Pasadena fire codes and the Caltech administration's recent focus on liability concerns, the firepot was removed. The brakedrum is a contest between the freshman class and the sophomore class over ownership of the brakedrum.

Ricketts House was known for athletics and student government in the 1950s, but in the past decades Ricketts has been known less for these activities, and more for activities which push the motto "Take me as I am" to the limit. Scurves have in recent years assumed the role of agents provocateurs on campus, confronting a growing legalism on the part of campus administration with increasingly envelope-pushing displays of self-expression. A recent example has been the inverted pentagram which Ricketts had displayed for years on the front wall of its dining room. While Ricketts views this as a symbol of the primacy of individual expression over political correctness, administrators have long requested its removal, citing a potentially hostile work environment for custodial and food service employees. During the recently completed renovations, the mural was painted over, and a new mural policy has been put in place which effectively prohibits its return. In 2005, the administration pressured Ricketts to make their website private because many of the pictures and quotes on the website were considered to be potentially offensive.

These frat-boys REALLY don't have anything to do with Ricketts, Iowa- but the rest of this website does! Ricketts is a quaint, quiet, picturesque little town in Wester Iowa. Sure, some of our folks have been known to raise a little Hell once in a while, but most of the time, we're pretty kind, well-behaved and God-fearing.

If you grew up in Ricketts, be sure to plan on coming to our annual reunion, the third Saturday in July. If you have memories or pictures of Ricketts to share, email them to our webmaster: ted.mallory -at- gmail.com

If you have other funny, kitsch, or corny "Not the same Ricketts" ideas, send them too. Help put Ricketts on the map!
